'Recruitment alone not enough,' Analyst warns on security gaps

A defence and security policy analyst, Collins Okechukwu Obasi, has cautioned that while military recruitment exercises like the 89RRI are important, they must be backed by strategic reforms to truly strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

Speaking with Legit.ng, Obasi pointed to deeper challenges beyond manpower, including outdated equipment, inter-agency rivalry, and the lack of a proactive security strategy.

“When we talk about managing Nigeria's security architecture, we have to talk about two things: kinetic and non-kinetic approach. The kinetic approach is basically militarily related – things that you can apply in order to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture,” he said.

He stressed that leadership decisions across strategic, operational, and tactical levels have often failed to yield lasting solutions.

“We have seen cases where Nigerians go to other countries for peacekeeping and they are actually coming back with medals of service, and you keep wondering what is actually wrong. You start to think about the lack of political will in Nigeria to make a decision and stand by it.”

Inter-agency rivalry crippling security efforts – Obasi warns

On military capacity, Obasi expressed worry that non-state actors now possess more advanced technology than Nigeria’s armed forces.

Citing past procurements, he emphasised that Nigeria’s military hardware is outdated and stressed the need to address “the lapses from lack of latest ammunition and arms.”

He also decried damaging rivalries among security agencies that result in withheld intelligence and operational failures.

“They want to be the one that will counter those attacks so they can be in the good books of the President,” he said.

While acknowledging that Nigeria is one of the most under-policed countries in the world, Obasi argued that the real challenge lies in strategic deployment.

“How strategic have we used those who we have recruited? How many of them are deployed for VIP protection, e$cort duties? How many people are now left to guide the civilians? That is where the problem lies,” he lamented.

Obasi added that security responses in Nigeria are often delayed, with authorities typically acting only after incidents have occurred—“and even then, the response is not rapid.”
