Nigerian Air Force

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is Nigeria’s aerial warfare arm, critical for national security, air defence, and support for ground operations. It strives to modernise its fleet and capabilities.

Founding: Formed on April 18, 1964, via the Air Force Act, the NAF started with West German training support, transitioning from a training unit to a combat-ready force.

Structure: Headquartered in Abuja, the NAF, led by the Chief of Air Staff, operates six commands, including Tactical Air Command and Mobility Command.

Operations: The NAF conducts air surveillance, combat missions, and counter-terrorism operations, notably against Boko Haram. It operates aircraft like Alpha Jets, F-7NI fighters, and Mi-35 helicopters.

Challenges & Reforms: Limited funding and ageing equipment hinder operations. Acquisitions like 12 A-29 Super Tucano jets in 2021 and international training partnerships aim to enhance modernisation and readiness.
