What Is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month for Muslims. It commemorates the period during which the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by the angel Jibreel (Gabriel) on a night known as Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power) .
During Ramadan, Muslims engage in fasting from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and sinful behavior. The fast is broken each evening with a meal called iftar, often starting with dates and water, following the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad . Before dawn, a pre-fast meal known as suhoor is consumed. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, serving as a means to cultivate self-restraint, spiritual growth, and empathy for those less fortunate .
